A mass march at noon could lead to significant traffic congestion in downtown Vancouver today.
As Daily Hive reported yesterday, striking BCGEU members, along with leaders and members from other unions, will participate in a march in downtown Vancouver today.
Community members who stand in solidarity will also participate, and the BCGEU said thousands could be in attendance.
The march begins at the Vancouver Art Gallery, and Daily Hive has obtained the route so you’ll know which areas to avoid if you happen to be driving into downtown today.
According to a map provided by the BCGEU, the route follows the path that many past demonstrations in Vancouver have taken.
The event starts at the Vancouver Art Gallery at noon, and participants will head down Robson Street before making a right turn onto Burrard Street. The route continues down Burrard before turning right on Cordova Street, then left on Howe Street, and finally left onto Canada Place.
The destination for participants in the mass march is Jack Poole Plaza, located near the Vancouver Convention Centre. Folks are expected to arrive at Jack Poole Plaza at 1 p.m.
This demonstration follows a breakdown in negotiations between the BCGEU and the B.C. government on Monday.
“The BCGEU returned to the bargaining table with the provincial government today for the first time since negotiations broke down in July. Unfortunately, talks have once again collapsed,” BCGEU said in a media release earlier this week.
“We came to the table ready to negotiate, but the government presented an offer that was barely different from their last one,” said BCGEU president Paul Finch.
According to BCGEU, the government tabled an offer of an increase of 2 per cent per year over two years, totalling 4 per cent. The BCGEU countered with 4 per cent each year over two years, totalling 8 per cent.
The latest breakdown comes with a threat of increased job escalation.
“Our members are facing a real affordability crisis, and the government’s response continues to fall far short. Until the government is prepared to engage in real negotiations, job action will escalate,” Finch said.
With the rainy weather already having an impact on traffic, you’ll want to pack your patience if you’re in downtown Vancouver during the march.
