Tom Cruise has a way better relationship with ex-wife Nicole Kidman these days — but a source tells National Enquirer it hasn’t stopped him from “feeling pretty smug” now that her marriage to Keith Urban has imploded.

“Tom took so much grief from Nicole and her Hollywood cronies when they first divorced,” the source says. “He’ll never forget or forgive how villainized he was, and in some ways, that far reaching perception haunts him to this day.”

The source adds that the Mission: Impossible star “didn’t have a high opinion about Keith.”

“It annoyed him when this guy was painted as this saintly figure who’d swooped in on a white horse, so to speak, and rescued Nicole from the hellish memory of their marriage,” the source explains. “He’s following the divorce news closely, and a part of him feels badly for her, since he knows how much she’s hurting.”

“At the same time, he’s also allowing himself a little pat on the back and telling people close to him that this is karma doing its thing to a large degree,” the source adds. “Bottom line: He thought they were a hyped up couple who clearly had very little in common from the get-go — now he’s been proved right.”

Kidman, 58, and Cruise, 63, were married for 11 years from 1990 to 2001. Four years later, she and Urban, 57, met during a gala in Los Angeles and the following year they officially tied the knot.

Earlier this week, news broke that the Big Little Lies star and Urban had separated — and on Tuesday, September 30, Kidman officially filed for divorce.
