Minister Niamh Smyth has paid tribute former Fianna Fail councillor and community stalwart Brendan Hughes who died today.

Minister Niamh Smyth said her thoughts and prayers are with the Hughes family following this double tragedy after his late wife Anna died on the 27th of September.

Speaking to Northern Sound, Minister Smyth said: “Brendan sat on Monaghan County Council for many years and was an incredibly generous man who was heavily invested in his local community of Castleblayney. He was a man who had a word for everyone and whose finger tips can bee seen all over Castleblayney and the rural areas surrounding it following the hard work he put in over many years representing the people of that area on Monaghan County Council.”

The joint funeral mass of the late Brenan Hughes and his wife Anna will take place at 2pm tomorrow in St Mary’s Church, Castleblayney. Burial afterwards in the adjoining cemetery, where Brendan and Anna will be laid to eternal rest together.
