One person has died after a serious crash closed the northbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway near Helmcken Road on Thursday afternoon.

The crash occurred in the 1100 block of the highway around 2 p.m., blocking the northbound lanes between Helmcken Road and McKenzie Avenue for more than three hours.

At the time, BC Emergency Health Services said two people were injured in the crash and taken to hospital, one with critical injuries and the other with serious injuries.

In an update Friday morning, Saanich Police said one of the injured people had died.

“Our condolences go out to their family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time,” said Saanich Police.

Police say they do not believe impairment or speed were factors in the crash.

“Preliminary findings suggest the collision was the result of a medical event,” said the police department.

Police say the investigation into the crash continues. On Thursday evening, police asked anyone who witnessed the crash or who had dashcam video of the area to contact Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.

“This is a tragic loss, and our thoughts are with the family, and everyone affected,” said Saanich Police Insp. Damian Kowalewich in a statement Friday morning.
