Police are investigating the death of an elderly woman after her body was found with injuries in her home in Sydney’s west.

Police have identified the woman as 84-year-old Irene Selmes. Her body was discovered in her bedroom at Comet Street, Melonba (near Marsden Park) around 12.30 pm on Saturday by a family member, who called Triple Zero.

Selmes, who lives with her son, son’s partner and the couple’s children, was last seen by family around 9.30 pm on Friday.

Mt Druitt Police Area Commander, Acting Superintendent Gretchen Grove-Jones said on Sunday the woman was found with injuries to her upper body.

“The family is doing as well as can be expected under the circumstances,” Grove-Jones said, adding they were cooperating with police.

A crime scene has been established, with a post-mortem expected to be carried out in the coming days to determine her cause of death.

No arrests have been made.

“The investigation is in its infancy … police are urging anyone with information to contact Mt Druitt police, or CrimeStoppers,” Grove-Jones said.
