MULTIPLE weather forecast models are predicting possible afternoon rain for next Sunday’s Repco Bathurst 1000, with race week providing a mixed bag of conditions.
Currently, different services are predicting a range of possible outcomes, from light showers to a 15mm overnight soaking.
On multiple occasions over the years, rain has impacted the Great Race.
In 2022, significant rainfall in the lead-up to the event impacted the race, with campgrounds and carparks turned into a quagmire, as Saturday’s Shootout was cancelled for the first time in the event’s history.
Additionally, the wet outfield on race day caused chaos on lap one on Mountain Straight, as well as in the Chase, with multiple cars coming to grief.
The 2017 race saw the heavens open on the starting grid, with the track remaining largely wet for the duration of 161 laps.
Other years that were significantly impacted by rain included 2000, 1996, 1992, 1974, and 1972.
Various models have predicted rain on Thursday; however, Friday and Saturday are expected to be dry.
The consensus among the various platforms is that daily temperatures will peak in the low to mid-20s on each day.
The first practice session for all drivers is scheduled for 1:20 p.m. AEDT on Thursday.
