Mounties say a 48-year-old man has been charged with assault and dangerous driving following a road incident involving a cyclist in Nanaimo, B.C., that was caught on camera and shared widely on social media in August.

Marcel Trudeau, a Nanaimo resident, will make his first court appearance on Tuesday, according to RCMP.

The update comes more than two months after dash camera footage recorded by a Tesla in the area appeared to show a motorcyclist at the intersection of Granite Park Road and Departure Bay Road reach out toward a cyclist on the roadway, who then tumbled across the opposite lane and onto the sidewalk.

Mounties say the cyclist, a 78-year-old man, was shoved and lost control of his bike, colliding with the raised sidewalk and crashing face first.

“The motorcyclist did not stop,” Nanaimo RCMP said in a news release. “The cyclist required medical treatment for his non-life-threatening injuries.”

The video recorded by the Tesla was posted on social media platforms and “garnered significant attention,” RCMP said.

“The resulting attention by local media and the public after viewing and posting the video of the incident, was extremely useful as it allowed the investigation to move forward and for police to identify the suspect, ” said Reserve Const. Gary O’Brien.

In June 2024, B.C. brought into legislation new rules to better protect vulnerable road users.

Drivers must keep at least one metre away when passing cyclists, pedestrians, motorcyclists and people using mobility devices on roads with speed limits of 50 km/h or less, and 1.5 metres on faster roads.Â
