The New York Yankees fans didn’t even wait until the game started before booing the Toronto Blue Jays.

Or more specifically, their anthem.

Ahead of the Game 3 matchup between the Yankees and Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium in New York, a portion of the Bronx crowd opted to boo the performance of “O Canada.”

Newsday’s Anthony Rieber provided footage of the incident.

Yankees fans had plenty to boo shortly after the the anthem, too, as Blue Jays star slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. launched his third home run of the series to give Toronto a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning while receiving his own Bronx cheer.

Toronto won the first two games of the series at home at the Rogers Centre, and have a chance to advance to the American League Championship Series for the first time since 2016 with one more victory.

Have Blue Jays fans booed the anthem before?

We can’t provide an exact reason behind the Yankee fans’ booing on Wednesday night, though it’s hardly without precedent north of the border.

A portion of Blue Jays fans booed the Star Spangled Banner ahead of the team’s home opener earlier this year, with scattered boos heard at other games throughout the year.

Anthem booing began by Canadian hockey and basketball fans earlier this year, as part of a form of protest against American president Donald Trump’s tariff threats in the early days of his second term as president.

Back at the 4 Nations Face Off tournament, Canadian hockey fans were even asked to not boo the anthem, though it was largely a fruitless request.
