In a social media post, Mr Hughes, the Sinn Féin MP, said he was “devastated to hear a pedestrian has died after being hit by a vehicle in Newry”.
“My thoughts and condolences are with their loved ones as they come to terms with this tragic incident and heart breaking loss,” Mr Hughes added.
Local MLA Justin McNulty said his thoughts are first and foremost with the family of the deceased but also the driver of the vehicle.
