Prince Harry was an unexpected but presumably very welcome guest at a charity event in NYC yesterday. He attended a reception hosted by Movember, the world’s largest men’s health charity, to highlight the pressing men’s health crisis in the US. Speaking at the event, the Prince said “the silence is killing people”.
Prince Harry unveils “The Real Face of Men’s Health: USA”
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are in New York for a series of events to mark World Mental Health Day.
Harry made a surprise appearance at the Movember event on Wednesday, 8 October. The reception launched a new report by the charity, titled “The Real Face of Men’s Health: USA.” The report explores the reasons that so many men (53%) die prematurely.
The Prince spoke about his decade-long experience of working with veterans and advocating for mental health. He said: “I found myself speaking to many veterans and sitting down with them I realized the silence is killing people. Stamping out the stigma globally, we’ve come a long way. Access to therapy is still a massive problem.”
He added: “When I speak to men, the same struggles keep coming up. Which tells me that the weight they carry isn’t uncommon. The biggest barrier is the belief that no one will understand. Loneliness convinces you you’re the only one, which is rarely true.”
The Duke also pointed to social media as a major hindrance of mental health. He said many young men are being raised by algorithms without real mentors, leaving them feeling stuck and hopeless.
Harry works with a number of charities around the world. Last month he spent time in the UK to visit several organizations he supports. Of course, he still found time to have that highly anticipated meeting with King Charles.
