The Met Office has issued its verdict on whether the UK will see any snow in the coming days after reports emerged that the country is set to see ‘four inches’ fall.
Anybody hoping for an early burst of the white stuff will be disappointed to learn that there is “no significant snow in the forecast”, according to the weather agency.
It comes after reports suggested Scotland would be hit by heavy snowfall towards the end of October, with one headline suggesting the UK would see a “four-inch burst”.
However, the Met Office has rejected the suggestion, issuing its own forecast for the coming days.
In a “fact check” on social media platform X, the Met Office said: “Is there really snow on the way? Largely settled weather for many into the start of next week, but that hasn’t stopped speculation in some online headlines.”
Issuing its own forecast, the weather agency said: “Settled weather is likely over the next few days and into the start of next week, with variable cloud and some light drizzle in places. There is no significant snow in the immediate forecast.”
Current Met Office weather maps do not show any snow in the forecast for the coming days, with temperatures remaining fairly mild even in the far north.
In its latest 10-day forecast, the Met Office said high pressure would dominate over the next week and a half.
Forecasters said a high pressure system currently sitting out to the west of the UK will bring settled conditions after a stormy period last week saw the first named storm of the season bring wet and windy weather to much of the country.
The Met Office said: “In the coming days, most areas can expect a mix of cloud and sunny spells, with high pressure continuing to push eastwards into next week.”
As the end of the month approaches, conditions may start to get more unsettled but confidence in the forecast is currently low.
“At this point, there is a chance that high pressure will drift eastwards, allowing more frontal systems to push in from the west,” the Met Office said. “This would bring a change to more unsettled conditions, with the potential for rain to return.”
In its long-range forecast, the Met Office said the start of November was likely to see low pressure systems dominating with some spells of heavy rain likely.
