The 55-winning boss is locked in talks over a return to Ibrox to replace Russell Martin(Image: PA)

Danny Murphy has revealed that pal Steven Gerrard has caused a surprise – by speaking to Rangers about a return.

The Liverpool icon has emerged as the clear frontrunner to replace the Scottish champions by axed Russell Martin.

Record Sport understands the former Gers gaffer is holding initial discussions with the club’s new American owners in London this week.

However, sources close to the Ibrox legend insist these will merely be the first “exploratory” steps in a process that could take some time yet to complete.

An Anfield ally Murphy is playing his cards close to his chest – but admits he is taken aback that Gerrard is weighing up a return.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since leaving Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq last season, and asked if he has heard from Gerrard about his summit with the Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises Murphy told talkSPORT: “No, I haven’t, I’m actually surprised that he’s talking to them.

“I thought he’d say no. Steve is one of these guys who’s got such belief in himself.”

Pushed on why he thought his Reds’ teammate would say no, he said: “Because last time it went well, a bit like an old girlfriend – they always say don’t go back.”

Barry Ferguson held the job on an interim basis from February – taking over from Philippe Clement – until the end of the Premiership season.

And he has left the door open for a return – if Gerrard doesn’t seal a sensation return to Ibrox.

Asked about any interest in the job on Go Radio, the Rangers icon chuckled: “It looks like Steven Gerrard.”

Asked if the deal collapsed would he be interested, Ferguson conceded: “Everybody knows it’s my club.

“I am very at peace and at ease with my life just now, I am enjoying taking up my ambassador role. I do a bit with Go Radio, I still do my column. I’m in a good place, but I am always there to help.”
