The Toronto Blue Jays have some time to rest and regroup after eliminating the New York Yankees in the ALDS on Wednesday night.
The Blue Jays will now have the next three days off before beginning the ALCS at Rogers Centre on Sunday. Their opponent remains unknown, as it will come down to who takes Game 5 between the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers on Friday night.
What made the Jays’ series-clinching win on Wednesday so impressive was the fact that they did it without a starting pitcher. They chose to only have Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, and Shane Bieber on their roster, which meant they needed to go with a bullpen day in Game 4. With the ALCS being a best-of-seven series, however, the Jays are almost certain to include a fourth starter on their roster.
The Blue Jays did have both Gausman and Yesavage in the bullpen on Wednesday night, but neither was called upon to enter the game. That would strongly suggest that they get the call to start in the opening two games of the series, both of which will be played in Toronto.
As for Game 3, Bieber will likely get the call once again despite a rough performance in his start versus the Yankees. While there’s no definitive answer just yet as to who a fourth starter will be, all signs are pointing to Chris Bassitt.
The 36-year-old Bassitt was left off the ALDS roster due in large part to a back injury he suffered late in the season. It sounds as though he was healthy enough to pitch, but the Jays elected to give him some more time to rest in hopes of reaching the ALCS. The veteran right-hander posted a 3.96 ERA in 31 starts this season.
The Jays may also elect to have Max Scherzer on the roster, perhaps even to work as a bulk reliever. The 41-year-old struggled late in the season, resulting in him posting a 5.19 ERA through 17 starts.
What’s also worth monitoring, depending on how the series goes, is that the Jays could opt to have a starting pitcher such as Gausman or Yesavage come out of the bullpen at some point after making their respective starts. It’s a route we’ve seen many organizations, including the Blue Jays, take in the past.
Back in 2015, David Price got the call in the opening game of the ALDS versus the Texas Rangers. That outing saw him pitch seven innings while giving up five earned runs on 90 pitches in what was a 5-3 loss.
Come Game 4, with the Jays needing a win, Price came in for relief of R.A. Dickey, throwing 50 pitches and getting credit for the win in an 8-4 victory.
With that said, there is a day’s rest between Games 2 and 3 of the upcoming ALCS. That means that a possible Game 5 would be played on Friday, Oct. 17, which would give Gausman his proper five days’ rest to make what would be his second start of the series.
A potential Game 6 and 7 would be back in Toronto on Sunday, Oct. 19, and Monday, Oct. 20, which would allow Yesavage and Bieber to make their second starts if they aren’t used in the bullpen prior.
Based on that information, here is a possibility of what we could see in terms of a starting rotation for the ALDS:
Game 1: Kevin Gausman
Game 2: Trey Yesavage
Game 3: Shane Bieber
Game 4: Chris Bassitt
* Game 5: Kevin Gausman
* Game 6: Trey Yesavage
* Game 7: Shane Bieber
* = if necessary
Also worth noting is that Bo Bichette, who has been out of the lineup since early September, revealed to reporters on Wednesday that he’s optimistic he can return for the ALCS. Expect to hear more on Bichette — and a potential plan with the starting rotation — in the coming days.
