The Bolton boss watched his side leak three goals for the first time this season, continuing a winless run away from home which stretches back nine league games.
Jake Beesley scored twice with Fabio Tavares adding another for the Brewers, who had not scored in front of their own fans since the opening weekend of the season.
And after missing some crucial opportunities with the game still goalless, Schumacher found himself repeating some familiar themes at the final whistle.
“They scored the goals at the crucial times and we didn’t,” Schumacher reflected. “That probably sums it up. It happens every week.
“You know it’s a recurring problem. I say the same thing to you every week. Again, we spoke about areas to play at this ground, on that pitch, which is a tough pitch to play on because it’s long and it’s dry.
“So we spoke about getting the ball in behind them early all week, movement in behind. In the first minute, a good pass in behind, ball holds up, Sam (Dalby) goes round the goalkeeper and should score. If he scores, it’s a completely different game.
“Then we get down the other end and Amario (Cozier-Duberry) puts Sam in again in front of goal.
“If that goes in, it’s 2-0, it’s game over. From that goal kick, we concede the goal from a penalty and the game is different.
“It’s really difficult to break down a team who defend with 11 bodies behind the ball on a crap pitch. It’s really hard.”
After Jake Beesley put Burton ahead from the penalty spot midway through the first half, Wanderers conceded a second goal to Tavares soon after half time.
Beesley was then able to finish off the rout in stoppage time, triggering a show of frustration from the 1,500 travelling supporters.
Schumacher said: “We were disappointed with the three goals.
“We can speak about tactics, we can speak about team selection, we can speak about the finer details of the game. But if you don’t do the basics right, especially away from home, in hard places like Northampton and Burton, it’s not the type of game that we want to try and play.
“If you don’t win contact from goal kicks, we can see the three goals from three goal kicks today. One was our own goal kick that we didn’t secure because Aaron Morley is on the floor. Two were from their goal kicks that were just long balls, second ball, and we’ve been done.
“So, the basics weren’t done well enough today.”
Schumacher had made three changes to the side, bringing in Aaron Morley, Ibrahim Cissoko and Sam Dalby for the injured Thierry Gale and Ethan Erhahon, with Marcus Forss dropping to the bench.
“Ethan pulled his thigh yesterday (Friday) in training, so he was out,” Schumacher said. “Thierry Gale had a bit of a bang before the Northampton game, actually. Got through it, played against Peterborough, got through it, was aware of it on Tuesday.
“It was just a flared up bang on his knee ligament. I don’t know how serious it’s going to be, but it’s going to be a little while.
“Two of the changes were enforced, and obviously Sam, because I knew it was the type of game it was going to be, direct going in to front players, two bigger lads up there to try and get hold of the ball.
“Honestly, when we did it, it worked. It should have been 2-0. Sam should have scored both.
“But we didn’t and we’re getting punished. We’re giving ourselves a mountain to climb away from home, because we keep making a mistake. That gives them a chance and a goal, and then we’re giving ourselves a mountain to climb.
“It’s our own fault, and we’ve got to try and fix it.”
