A man has been arrested on suspicion of a firearms offence after detectives said they acted on ‘credible intelligence’.

The man, aged in his 30s, was held after police descended at a property on Thorpe Street in Salford this afternoon. He has been arrested on suspicion of possessing a firearm.

Greater Manchester Police said that the incident is not related to the terrorist attack at a synagogue in Crumpsall last week.

The force said in a statement released tonight: “A man in his 30s has been detained by officers in Salford following a proactive firearms strike in the area. Following intelligence that the man was in possession of a firearm and ammunition, we swooped on an address on Thorpe Street.

“At the address, officers from the Salford division arrested the male on suspicion of possession of a firearm and he remains in police custody for questioning. A scene remains in place while officers continue with their investigations.

“This investigation is not related to the terrorism incident which occurred on Thursday 2 October 2025 outside a synagogue on Middleton Road in Crumpsall.”

Detective Inspector Michael Jimenez, from GMP’s Salford division, said: “Earlier this afternoon, we executed a warrant at an address in Salford following intelligence received regarding the potential presence of a firearm and ammunition.

“The operation was carried out swiftly and safely, and at this stage, the investigation remains in its early phases with a scene still in place.

“We understand that incidents of this nature can cause concern, but we want to reassure the public that there is no wider risk or threat to the community. Our officers acted on credible intelligence and took decisive action to ensure public safety.

“Here at GMP, we remain committed to tackling gun crime and removing dangerous weapons from our streets. We will continue to work closely with local partners and residents to ensure Salford remains a safe place to live and work.

“Extra patrol officers have been deployed around the local area both on foot and in patrol cars. If you have any concerns, our officers will be happy to provide reassurance and listen to any of your queries.”
