A teenage boy has been airlifted to hospital in critical condition after being bitten on the stomach by a shark in Far North Queensland.

The teenager was swimming in waters off Cook Esplanade on Thursday Island shortly before 6.30pm on Saturday when the attack occurred.

He was rushed to a local hospital with significant abdominal injuries before being airlifted to Townsville University Hospital in life-threatening condition.

A spokesperson for the Queensland Ambulance Service told the Daily Mail it received reports of a shark bite in the area about 6.23pm.

The teenager remained in critical condition as of Sunday morning, Queensland Health told the Daily Mail.

While shark attacks are uncommon in the area, fatal incidents have previously been recorded in the surrounding Torres Strait waters.

More to come.
