A 16-year-old boy has been arrested after a car crash in a regional Victorian town earlier this year left two other teenagers dead.

Zane Oldis, 18, and Taj Patten-McLaren, 15, died when the Ford Falcon they were travelling in crashed into a tree in Orbost in far-east Gippsland on June 10.

A 16-year-old boy was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

At the time of the crash, it was believed Oldis was driving the car, police said.

Four months on, they will allege the 16-year-old survivor was behind the wheel.

The teenager from East Gippsland was arrested this morning.

He was taken into custody where he will be interviewed.

Following the crash, tributes flowed for the teenagers who were killed in the crash.

“He was a good bloke, had a lot of good memories with him,” friend Hayden said.

“It’s gonna be sad that he’s gone now.”

Taj’s mum, Bianca, took to social media to bid farewell to her son.

“Taj my beautiful sweet gentle boy. I love you forever my baby,” she said.

Police said at the time the crash would have “a big ripple effect” on the local community.

“All local communities are tight-knit,” Victoria Police road policing Senior Sergeant Luke Banwell said.

“I guarantee people in the town will know of these people and this is what really shocks and traumatises the local community, is something as devastating as this.”
