On Tuesday afternoon police released a brief statement saying a man had been taken into custody and was assisting with their inquiries.

“There is no threat to public safety,” they said.

Neighbour Doris Sinclair said she felt shocked and scared after hearing about the man’s death.

“It’s really hard to come back from my shopping and hear this, its really shocking,” she said.

“We can’t understand it, its really scary. My heart is going 90 miles an hour.

“It’s not right, you can’t even leave your house now. Years ago you used to walk your dog 8pm at night but you can’t now, your kids can’t go out the front and play.

“It’s getting ridiculous. Something has to be done.”

Another long term resident, Deborah Price, said she would not have expected someone to be murdered in their tight-knit community.
