Another weather front bearing down on the South is set to bring strong winds to parts of Otago, including Dunedin, and Southland.

MetService has issued a strong wind watch for Dunedin, for 10 hours from 5am to 3pm tomorrow.

The forecaster says southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places, and there is a moderate chance of upgrading to a warning.

A strong wind watch has also been issued for Clutha, Southland south of Riversdale, and Stewart Island, for nine hours from 2am to 11am tomorrow.

West to southwest winds may approach severe gale in exposed places.

MetService says rain is likely to follow in parts of the South from Friday into the weekend.

The rain is expected to move north over the weekend, and heavy falls are expected in the west.
