During the course of Netanyahu’s meeting with Eitan Mor, son of Tzvika and Efrat Mor, Eitan told him that he had met with Ezz al‑Din al‑Haddad, the current head of Hamas’s military wing, “and he told me that if anyone goes out first, it will be me: ‘After all, your father anyway doesn’t go out to demonstrations, so we’ll return you first.’”

Eitan’s statement is highly significant, as the Israeli public has been split over the course of the war whether more demonstrations enabled the release of hostages or whether quiet and covert diplomacy together with tenacious military action achieved this goal in a more effective way. Mor’s parents chose not to participate in demonstrations, believing that the pressure being put on the Israeli government simply raised the price of the hostages and stalled the efforts to release them. Mor’s candid report from the Hamas leader supports this approach.
