In July 2025, 55 340 first-time asylum applicants (non-EU citizens) applied for international protection in EU countries, marking a 27% decrease compared with July 2024 (75 820) and a 6% increase compared with June 2025 (52 235). 

There were also 11 515 subsequent applicants, representing a 62% increase compared with July 2024 (7 110) and a 41% rise compared with June 2025 (8 140).

Largest group of asylum seekers from Venezuela

In July 2025, Venezuelans remained the largest group of people seeking asylum (6 660 first-time applicants), followed by Afghans (4 900), Bangladeshis (3 110) and Syrians (2 685).

Italy, Spain, France and Germany received 73% of first-time applicants

Italy (11 190), Spain (10 720), France (10 005) and Germany (8 285) received the highest number of first-time asylum applicants, accounting for nearly three-quarters (73%) of all first-time applicants in the EU.

The EU total rate of first-time asylum applicants in July 2025 was 12.3 per hundred thousand people. Compared with the population of each EU country (on 1 January 2025), the highest rates of first-time applicants were recorded in Greece (46.1), ahead of Luxembourg (22.7) and Belgium (22.1).

1 755 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum

In July 2025, a total of 1 755 unaccompanied minors applied for asylum for the first time in the EU. The highest numbers came from Afghanistan (255), Eritrea (250), Somalia and Egypt (190).

The EU country that received the highest number of asylum applications from unaccompanied minors was the Netherlands (330), followed by Germany (315) and Spain (235).
