An American tourist was fatally stabbed and another wounded during an attempted robbery in Portugal.
According to CNN Portugal, the incident occurred near the Church of the Navigators in the coastal town of Cascais, west of Lisbon, at 3:16 a.m. on Wednesday.
Investigators told CNN one of the tourists was returning to his hotel when three suspects confronted him and tried to rob him. The victims were attacked after they resisted.
The three suspects have been arrested, CNN reported, with one of the men facing a homicide charge.
The victim, who suffered deep stab wounds to vital areas, has not been identified by name and it is unclear where they are from. The second victim is in stable condition, CNN reported.
U.S. state department officials said they are aware of the attack and that they are ready to provide assistance.
Portugal, while not as popular as neighboring Spain for tourism, is a desired destination in its own right due to relatively affordable travel and its scenic coastlines, historic towns, and vibrant culture.
In addition to Lisbon, Porto, Algarve and Sintra are popular spots.
