Athens police have announced a ban on public gatherings in the city center on Thursday, marking one year since the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.
The decision was made on grounds of public safety, as planned demonstrations were deemed to pose a serious risk, authorities announced.
According to the police announcement, a scheduled rally by the groups Gather for Gaza and Stand with Palestine, with participation by the Turkish People’s Front, was prohibited.
The ban applies from 5 p.m. Thursday until 6 a.m. Friday and covers Syntagma Square and the wider inner-city area, police said.
Sinwar, a senior Hamas figure and leader of the group in Gaza, was killed by Israeli forces on October 16 last year.
