Liberal MP Terry Sheehan has taken aim at Pierre Poilievre’s recent visit to northern Ontario, calling out what he describes as a troubling track record on jobs and economic development

Pierre Poilievre’s choice of the Trinity Tower site is a baffling choice of location for his campaign-style whistle stop in Sault Ste. Marie today.

Less than a year ago, the government announced that it supported the project with a $35-million loan through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. — just one of the many projects the government has supported in the community.

The fact is, the new government has the most ambitious housing plan, and Budget 2025, to be tabled next month, will build on this momentum with further measures to lower costs for builders, catalyze private capital and double the pace of homebuilding across Canada.

While touring Northern Ontario, Poilievre talked about supporting major regional employers but has forgotten his own failed track record when he was in Stephen Harper’s government — a time when Algoma Steel entered bankruptcy because of inaction on cheap dumped steel, Tenaris Tube employed just 25 people (they have since grown to 800) and St. Marys Paper was shuttered forever, with 300 jobs lost.

This is his record.

The new government is helping businesses grow and adapt to changing circumstances, such as the support for Algoma Steel announced last month. The government has a plan to build Canada strong, and it will need resources like Ontario steel and lumber to do that.

After wasting $2 million of taxpayers’ money forcing a byelection for a seat the Conservatives already held, Poilievre is now trying to shore up support for his upcoming leadership review.

This election-style tour demonstrates that the only job Pierre Poilievre is truly concerned about is his own.
