In the last 24 hours, three pedestrians have been killed in what Calgary police are calling “entirely preventable” collisions.
A woman in her eighties was killed after a car hit her in the southwest community of Woodlands Thursday night, police said.
The collision happened at 8:30 p.m., when the woman was crossing Woodpark Boulevard S.W., at the intersection of 117th Avenue S.W.
The driver, a 20-year-old man, is not believed to have been impaired, but police said they are investigating speed as a factor.
3rd fatality in 24 hours
On Wednesday, two separate collisions in southeast Calgary led to two deaths.
On Thursday morning around 7:30 a.m., police were called to a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian on Riverbend Drive S.E. A woman in her seventies was killed. Police said the driver fled the scene, but later that morning turned himself in to police.
On Wednesday night around 9:20 p.m., a van struck a 47-year-old man in a crosswalk in the intersection of International Avenue at 38th Street S.E. in Forest Lawn. Police said he died at the hospital overnight.
Most fatal collisions in 10 years
Police said the latest incident marks Calgary’s 30th fatal collision of 2025, meaning last year’s 10-year high has been surpassed. It was also the city’s 11th fatal pedestrian collision.
In a statement, Calgary Police Service Traffic Unit Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward said the three latest collisions were “entirely preventable.”
“This is a trend we cannot allow to continue. We have entered a season with shorter daylight hours, and it is more important than ever to stay alert and adjust our habits, regardless of your mode of travel,” he said.
