A hero dog from Donegal appeared on The Late Late Show tonight in the final of the Pet Hero Awards.

Misty the Golden Retriever from Malin was one of three remarkable pooches chosen for the national final, which was decided live on air.

Misty, aged 7, is the pride of the Hasson family. Although he was never trained as a diabetic alert dog, he has an extraordinary ability to sense changes in the blood sugar levels of Aoife, who has diabetes.

“He has alerted us on many occasions and helped Aoife out a lot,” said mum Caroline, who joined Aoife on the programme.

The judging panel for the Pet Hero Awards included animal lover Linda Martin, presenter Baz Ashmawy, and author and comedian David Williams. The overall award went to Oliver, a Golden Terrier who volunteers in hospitals.

But Misty made quite the impression on Linda, who said: “I am incredibly impressed by Misty, the fact that that dog understands and senses the blood suger is about to drop, it’s incredible.”

The top prize was a dog-friendly hotel stay in Cork, while all three finalists also received a pet-friendly hamper full of treats.

A well-deserved honour for pawsome Misty!
