In a shocking spectacle of political theatre, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has unleashed a torrent of explosive accusations against the RCMP, alleging collusion to cover up scandals from the Trudeau era that he claims should have led to criminal charges.

This incendiary rhetoric is sending shockwaves through the moderate conservative ranks and raises a critical question for the CPC: Is this truly the leader they want steering their ship? While Poilievre’s words may resonate with some on social media, they ultimately deliver a wrapped gift to the Liberals, jeopardizing any serious pursuit of governance.

Poilievre’s claims, made during a recent interview on the YouTube channel Northern Perspective, border on the absurd and are profoundly alarming. He unleashed a barrage of attacks, labelling RCMP leadership as “despicable” and suggesting that former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “probably” violated the Criminal Code during the SNC-Lavalin affair.

Yet conspicuously absent from his tirade is any shred of evidence to back his bombastic assertions. Rather than promoting constructive dialogue on accountability, Poilievre appears more interested in sowing division and fear in the political landscape, all while letting Trudeau occupy space in his mind — rent-free.

Even more troubling is Poilievre’s relentless preoccupation with a prime minister who is no longer in office. This fixation paints a portrait of a leader who, frankly, seems like a one-trick pony. Instead of crafting a forward-looking vision, he relies on old scandals to extract political capital, revealing a glaring inadequacy in his leadership approach.

Amid a global trade war, market uncertainty, and recession-inducing tariffs, Poilievre cannot pivot away from his usual antics. Instead of focusing on substantive solutions, he is busy slinging accusations not only at his opponents but also at the very institutions tasked with protecting Canadians. By doggedly targeting Trudeau, he isn’t merely casting aspersions on a former leader; he is actively undermining the crucial structures that have safeguarded our nation since its inception.

Is it not the duty of our leaders to uphold the integrity of established institutions like the RCMP? When confronted about Poilievre’s allegations, RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme firmly countered claims of political interference, confirming that the RCMP thoroughly examined the SNC-Lavalin affair under the previous government.

Duheme even extended an olive branch, urging Poilievre to engage in respectful dialogue with the force — an invitation that Poilievre has chosen to ignore in favour of abrasive accusations. This refusal to engage constructively highlights a troubling trend in contemporary politics, where division often eclipses respect.

As Canadians, we must reflect on the kind of leadership we want. A leader who resorts to slandering the institutions vital to our democracy cannot be trusted to uphold the values of our nation. Poilievre’s tactics not only erode trust in the RCMP but also undermine the very fabric of Canadian governance.

The past few years have underscored the perils of a political landscape steeped in outrage and divisiveness. Poilievre’s strategy eschews substantive discourse, opting instead for sensationalism that tears down meaningful dialogue. This approach is a disservice to Canadians, who deserve politicians focused on unity, progress, and respect for all citizens, including those committed to public service.

In these polarized times, the public craves authentic leaders who inspire rather than incite. Poilievre’s desperate quest for relevance, exemplified by his unfounded accusations against the RCMP, reveals a profound leadership crisis. As he embarks on this evidence-free witch hunt, he only reinforces why a man who has held a seat for his entire adult life struggled to secure re-election against a leader like Prime Minister Carney. The Conservatives deserve better than a political leader steeped in division and anger.

As we move forward, it is time for the Conservative Party to take a long, hard look in the mirror after a decade in the political wilderness. The party must rediscover its roots and recommit to the values embodied by visionaries like former prime ministers Brian Mulroney and Stephen Harper. It’s time to restore decorum to a base that has taken a sharp turn down the conspiracy-laden highway, leaving behind the principled discourse and pragmatic leadership that once defined the party.

The Conservatives need leaders who elevate the conversation, not lower it to the depths of sensationalism. Canada deserves a Conservative Party that stands for integrity and respect — a party that can reclaim its legacy and unite Canadians rather than divide them. The choice is clear: rise above the noise or risk fading into irrelevance.
