Nathan Jones was pleased to see his side return from the October international break with three points as the Addicks beat Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at The Valley.

It was a hard-fought win after a strong first half that saw Charlton go into the break 2-0 up. Jamal Lowe’s 70th-minute goal set up a tense finish but the hosts were able to hold on for an important three points that moves them to ninth in the Sky Bet Championship.

Speaking to CharltonTV, Jones said: “It was a real hard-fought game. I thought we were good in the first half and obviously went 2-0 up and it probably could have been a little bit more with some situations and some opportunities, but we knew that they’d come out fighting. They’ve come back twice this season from 2-0 down, so we knew it would be a difficult second half, and we made it that way. Credit to them because they kept fighting, they kept pressing buoyed by an excellent crowd in their end.

I just would like us to have a little bit more control in the second half, but any win in the Championship is a good win. Especially coming back from the international break where we’ve had four away on international duty, you don’t know how people are, there’s a bit of rustiness and it showed in that second half.”

Sonny Carey opened the scoring for the Addicks, his third in as many home games. The goal itself was the result of him showing real desire to get to the ball after his first shot at goal had been saved.

“I thought he was excellent,” said Jones. “The energy he shows and the quality for the run, he could have scored off the first one but then the good finish in the second one. He was the threat all game, so I’m delighted for him and delighted we won the game.”

Charlton’s second came when James Bree’s excellent whipped set piece was met by the head of Reece Burke, finding the net for the first time as a Charlton player.

Jones said: “It was just a wonderful ball, you can’t find many better balls than that. Burkey’s scored goals for me before. We mentioned to him on Thursday that he was due one.

“We’re just delighted with the win, and we know we could have been better in the second half and we’re under no illusions with that.”

The Addicks now travel to Portman Road on Tuesday for a tough game against Ipswich Town.
