On Friday, Ireland is likely to elect the grown-up equivalent of a student union radical as president, and for the same reason radicals always get elected to students’ unions: because too many ordinary voters will stay at home and the most motivated will turn out.
Plenty of Catherine Connolly’s allies seem fervent indeed. People Before Profit, one of the parties backing her, is likely to get lots of its voters to turn up at polling stations, and Sinn Féin, which is also supporting her, usually has a good ground campaign.
