Jyoti Gondek has officially conceded the 2025 Calgary municipal election, ending her bid for a second term as mayor after a highly contested campaign that saw shifting voter sentiment across the city.
Gondek’s concession came late Monday evening following the release of unofficial results from the City of Calgary, which showed her trailing well behind challengers Jerome Farkas and Sonya Sharp with over two-thirds of polls reporting.
The results mark a political shift for Calgary, as Gondek’s tenure was defined by both ambitious urban initiatives and contentious disputes with the provincial government.
Despite her efforts, including a high-profile re-election launch in August, the incumbent faced mounting criticism over issues such as transit planning and emergency response to the catastrophic water main break earlier this year.
As the city awaits official confirmation of results, Gondek’s concession signals a turning point in Calgary’s leadership. Her successor will inherit a city grappling with complex challenges—from housing affordability to climate resilience.
As of midnight on election night, the race was still too close to call between Farkas and Sharp, with Farkas holding a slight lead of less than 2,000 votes.
