Lauren Darul, accused stabber of sushi chef Wan Lai, to remain in custody after dropping bail bid

The woman accused of stabbing a sushi chef in a shocking daylight attack in Melbourne’s CBD has dropped her bid for bail.

Lauren Darul, 32, appeared via video link before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon after being arrested on October 2 over the alleged stabbing of 36-year-old Wan Lai.

Darul was on bail at the time of the random attack and has since been hit with more charges, bringing the total to 17, the court heard.

Her defence lawyer, Ashlee McPhail, told the court the bail application had been withdrawn.

Darul had been living at Make Room, a supportive housing project jointly funded by the Victorian government and the City of Melbourne.

She was reported missing from the facility and had failed to attend a scheduled appointment for her medication and mental health treatment.

Darul is due to return to court on November 25.

Lai’s family told 7NEWS that she is recovering slowly but slammed the state’s victim support system.

Lai was walking to work on Little Bourke St on the morning of October 2 when she was allegedly stabbed by Darul.

CCTV footage captured the horrific moment, showing Darul running up behind Lai, wielding a knife and locking eyes with her before allegedly stabbing her in the right side of her chest.

Lai remained in hospital for three days and has since moved residence following the incident.
