If you’ve ever read the short story, “The Long Walk” by master horror novelist and Maine native Stephen King, you know it’s a shocking tale.

And it’s now streaming on digital platforms, and video-on-demand.

The story was one of four in King’s 1982 release, “The Bachman Books.” King wrote the story under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman.

In the film, “a group of teenage boys compete in an annual contest known as ‘The Long Walk,’ in which they must maintain a certain walking speed or get shot,” IMDb states.

But there’s much more to the story.

Some Stephen King fans have maintained over the years that the story has roots in true history, but some of that discussion remains up for debate.

All the aforementioned streaming platforms have the film available to rent at $19.99. There is also an option to purchase the movie for $24.99. Typically, the prices of new movie releases don’t decrease for weeks, and sometimes even months. Eventually, the rental price will be around $5.99, but it won’t be for some time.

What is ‘The Long Walk’ about?

The description of the tale on the Stephen King website states, “In the near future, where America has become a police state, (100) boys are selected to enter an annual contest where the winner will be awarded whatever he wants for the rest of his life.

“The game is simple – maintain a steady walking pace of four miles per hour without stopping. Three warnings, and you’re out – permanently.”
