The Met Office has told parts of the UK to “be prepared” for flurries of snow over the weekend as it says the UK is expected to see a “notable” drop in temperature.

Over the coming days an arctic blast of cold air is expected to hit the UK as Storm Benjamin moves away, forecasters suggest.

As this blast of air sweeps over the UK, the Met Office says temperatures will “drop sharply”, making it feel “raw and chilly” for most over the weekend.

However the weather agency adds that these colder conditions could make way for some sleet and snow over the next days, and has warned anyone living on, or heading to, high ground to “be prepared”.

As temperatures fall over the weekend, the Met Office has warned of a “reasonable chance” of sleet and snow, particularly across the Scottish Highlands and Grampians.

It added: “Further south, the risk is much lower, but isolated pockets of frost are possible where skies clear and winds ease.”

Met Office weather maps currently show flurries across parts of northern Scotland over Saturday, with pockets of snow continuing into Sunday.

While the weather agency suggests snow and sleet will be mainly seen over points of high ground and across parts of Scotland over the weekend, it does suggest Saturday will be chilly for most across the UK and says there is “potential for frost” in rural areas and even in some towns and cities.

It says any sleet or snow is unlikely to be “heavy or disruptive”, but says these weather conditions are not unusual for the time of year and so anyone heading to hills or mountains show “be prepared”.

Temperatures are expected to remain below average, with the Met Office suggesting most of the UK will see single figures while some will just reach double figures.

Temperature maps show highs of 11C in England on Saturday (October 25), 10C in Wales, 8C in Scotland and 8C in Northern Ireland. Temperatures are expected to remain largely the same over Sunday (October 26).
