Matt Renshaw has somewhat been the forgotten man of Australian cricket, considering he made his Test debut in 2016, played the last of his 14 Tests in 2023, and has only just made his international white-ball debut. For so long he was simply judged as an opening bat, but he has worked hard to build his game at domestic level.

“He backs himself from the get-go. He looks to score runs. He doesn’t worry about getting out,” Australian great Mark Waugh said during commentary on Fox Cricket.

Fellow Fox commentator David Warner said Renshaw – the pairing having once opened the batting together – had worked on his front foot game, and was now a more complete player.

Could strong ODI form help position Renshaw to replace Usman Khawaja at the top of the Test order when Khawaja retires, potentially at the end of this summer?

We’ll see where things end up for the Queenslander.
