Benvenuto Cellini lands Group 2 victory at Leopardstown

Benvenuto Cellini: out of fashion in the Futurity Trophy at DoncasterCredit: www.carolinenorris.ie

Well, not to sound like a broken record, but Benvenuto Cellini is still drifting for the Futurity Trophy (2.05).

He’s as big as 7-4 now with William Hill, having earlier drifted to 11-8 from 5-4 last night.

What’s going on? We saw with Delacroix how a big drift can put the kiss of death on a Ballydoyle hope, but the flashy chestnut was seemingly the choice of number-one jockey Christophe Soumillon for a reason and it’s not like Aidan O’Brien had to run him.

His stablemates Action and Hawk Mountain are hovering around the 100-30 mark, but perhaps one of them will become the new favourite if this drift continues.

There’s only 1lb between the trio on ratings, with Hawk Mountain best on 111, so maybe the market is correcting itself from the hype with Benvenuto Cellini.

I’m not convinced the other two will be superstars though, whereas he can be, so I hope he wins.
