On Saturday, October 25th, the Montreal Canadiens announced that forward Patrik Laine had undergone surgery to treat a core muscle injury, described in French as a sports hernia.

The Canadiens further announced that the surgery was performed by Dr. Mark Zoland. Zoland specializes in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of sports hernias, core muscle injuries, and all types of abdominal wall hernias in athletes, and is well-known within the hockey community.

Laine’s recovery is expected to take three to four months. He had been out of the lineup since October 18th. In five games with the Canadiens this season, the Finnish winger has one assist and a minus three rating.

This marks Laine’s second significant injury in as many years. Last season, he missed the first twenty-four games of the season due to a knee injury suffered in a preseason collision with Cédric Paré. The 27-year-old is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the campaign.
