It was an electric night at Rogers Centre for the Toronto Blue Jays’ first World Series game in 32 years.
And, it was capped off by audible jeering from the crowd towards one of the best baseball players of this generation.
After Blue Jays fans booed Shohei Ohtani during his first at-bat, they stepped up their creativity with a chant during his last appearance at the plate in the ninth inning.
As Ohtani stepped up to face Jays’ pitcher Eric Lauer in the ninth, the Toronto crowd serenaded the Japanese superstar with chants of “we don’t need him.”

Lauer ended up walking Ohtani before sealing the victory with a strikeout against Mookie Betts.
Ohtani was reportedly close to signing with the Jays in 2023, before eventually inking the biggest contract in MLB history with the Dodgers.
Jays’ manager John Schneider, who joked prior to Game 1 that Ohtani should give back his Blue Jays swag, gave his thoughts on the Toronto crowd taunting the 29-year-old.
“I just love energetic fan bases,” Schneider said postgame. “It happens in different ways and shapes and forms at every stadium. We saw it, just the last series in Seattle.”
Schneider did admit that he heard the chants ringing throughout Rogers Centre.
“I kind of heard it, but it’s tough to talk about a player like that to be honest with you,” he said.
“He’s special. I’m glad that the home run he hit came when it came, when we had a little cushion, but I love that our fans are passionate about our team.”

George Springer was also asked after the win if he heard the chants.
“Yeah, I mean, I think everybody heard it,” the 36-year-old said.
“Listen, at the end of the day, Shohei Ohtani is an unbelievable baseball player. So, any team that he’s on, it’d be awesome.”

When a reporter mentioned to Springer that the Blue Jays actually don’t need Ohtani when they have role players such as Ernie Clement and Addison Barger stepping up, Springer wasn’t taking the bait.
“Yeah…I mean, at the end of the day, that’s Shohei Ohtani, man. That’s one of the best baseball players ever, and he’s still got, like, 15 years to go. He’s an unbelievable talent, but this is who we are as a team. This is us.”
