A section of State Highway 1 has been closed north of Dunedin, after a crash.
Two cars reportedly collided on the bridge over the Waikouaiti River, police said. One of them had been towing a caravan.
The crash happened about 10:20am on Monday, and a section of highway between Waikouaiti and Waitati Road was closed as emergency services responded.
A MetService yellow heavy rain watch – including the area directly north of Waikouaiti – has been issued for the period from noon on Monday, while multiple other warnings and watches for wild weather covered much of the rest of the South Island and North Island.
The area has been battered by damaging storms in the past week, with some parts of the South Island still without power or cell phone cover as repairs continue.
Diversions were being set up at the crash site, police said.
New Zealand Transport Agency said people planning to drive this section of road should allow extra time for travel and follow the directions of emergency services.
