Lando Norris dominated the Mexican Grand Prix to claim his sixth victory of the season, and snatch the driver’s championship lead from McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri by just one point.

Such an impressive display was not well-received by the local fans, however, with Norris greeted by boos during post-victory trackside interview, and at the podium ceremony.

It is unclear why exactly so many Mexican Formula One dislike the Brit, but there was a suggestion from Mexican media during the post-race pressers that it stemmed from McLaren team orders at Monza, where Piastri was forced to let him through after a slow pit stop.

Regardless of the reasons behind it, the booing was heavily condemned by Sky Sports’ pundits.

“I hate booing. Whenever it happens, I hate it. When people booed Max at certain races.. it’s just wrong,” Karun Chandhok said.

“Lando did an outstanding job and that should be applauded.”

Jamie Chadwick later said: “I hate it. I hate booing for anyone.

“Cheer louder for the person you want to support, but don’t boo anyone.

“What Lando did today doesn’t deserve any boos. He pout on a masterclass.

“Okay, he was off in the distance so it wasn’t the most exciting race for everyone to watch, but that needs to be applauded, not booed.”

It is not the first time this year that Norris has been booed by fans, as it happened during the podium ceremony for the Italian Grand Prix, where he finished second, too.

The new world championship leader did not seem too bothered by the noise.

“It’s one weekend at a time. I’m happy, I’m focused on myself,” Norris said.

“I keep my head down, I ignore all of this, keep to myself. It’s working at the minute, so I’m happy.”
