There were two separate alleged assaults at a protest in North York on Sunday, police say.

Police were running crowd control at a demonstration near Bathurst Street and Sheppard Avenue.

The first incident happened at around 12:15 p.m. Toronto police say a suspect allegedly spat in the face of another person before being arrested by officers on scene.

The second incident occurred at approximately 1:15 p.m., when a suspect allegedly confronted someone using a megaphone by pushing it into the victim’s face, causing injury, and damaging the device.

Officers did not disclose the severity of the victim’s physical injuries, but they said the suspect was arrested shortly after.

Police charged Manouchehr Shahbaz Mehr, a 70-year-old from Mississauga, with assault in connection with the first incident.

Ievgen Chornogala, a 43-year-old from Toronto, has been charged with assault and mischief in connection with the megaphone incident.
