There is deep sadness in Downings following the passing of Mairead O’Connell (née Doherty), a much-loved woman who was the heart and soul of the parish.
Mairead passed away peacefully at home at Baile Na Deora, surrounded by her loving family.
She was a vital figure of the family-owned Singing Pub on the Atlantic Drive near Downings, where she had a warm welcome for everyone. Mairead’s warm, kind and fun-loving nature left a lasting impression on all staff and everyone she met.
The Singing Pub will remain closed until Friday 31st October, as they mourn the loss of Mairead, who was affectionately known as “the life and soul of the Thatch.”
Downings GAA Club have paid tribute to Mairead for her support of the club and especially the senior women’s team over the years.
“Bhí sí i gcónaí ann ag gach cluiche ag tacú lena páistí, Aoibhinn, Áine, Meabh, Cliodhna, Éilis agus Eoin. Tá ár smaointe lena muintir agus cairde s’aici ag an am thar a bheith deacair seo,” the club said.
Glenree United FC also shared their condolences, saying: “Mairead was a beloved mother to two of our current youth players, and her presence will be profoundly missed by everyone at Glenree United FC. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family during this difficult time.”
Mairead will be dearly missed and never forgotten by her devoted husband Damien, daughters Aoibhinn, Áine, Meabh, Clíodhna, Eilís and son Eoin, her Dad Mickey, brothers Seamus and Seán and sisters Marie, Yvonne and Fiona, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters in law and her large circle of family and friends.
She was pre-deceased by her brother Michéal and her mum Bridie.
Mairead’s remains will be reposing at her home at Baile Na Deora, Downings, F92 HT63 from 2pm to 9pm Monday the 27th of October and 2pm to 9pm Tuesday the 28th of October.
Family time only please from 9pm after the rosary until 2pm each day, and on the morning of the funeral.
A shuttle bus will be in operation from The Singing Pub, Downings F92 EA33 from 2pm to 9pm both days.
Funeral mass on Wednesday the 29th October at 11am at the Church of St. John the Baptist, Carrigart, followed by private cremation.
