Ireland made it three wins in a row over Scotland in the Mowi Quaich Cup on Saturday, but the two-point victory in Inverness came with a worrying looking injury for Tipperary’s Darragh McCarthy.
Cha Dwyer was the hero on the scoreboard, bagging two crucial goals, including a decisive finish in the 75th minute, as Ireland edged it 3-03 to 2-04 in a typically physical instalment of the shinty-hurling international.
But while Sambo McNaughton’s side were celebrating a win, their first on Scottish soil since 2013, Tipperary fans were left holding their breath after Darragh McCarthy was forced off injured in the first half.

The Toomevara forward, a star figure in Tipperary’s All-Ireland win under Liam Cahill, looked to be in serious discomfort as he was helped from the field following an off-the-ball incident. No official update has been issued on the severity of the injury, but ahead of the 2026 inter-county season , it’s a potential blow for the Premier County.
Darragh McCarthy has enjoyed an eventful breakthrough year, capped by a Young Hurler of the Year nomination. His free-taking and ball-winning ability have made him a cornerstone of Tipp’s attack. Any extended spell on the sidelines would be a major setback for both him and Tipperary.
Scotland had stunned the visitors early on, with Ruaridh Anderson netting twice inside 20 minutes to give the hosts a seven-point lead. Ireland were wayward in attack, racking up 17 wides, before Dwyer and James Doyle fired home goals to level it by half-time at 2-01 apiece.
Points were scarce after the break, but a couple of ’65s from Eoghan Connolly gave Ireland their first lead, before Dwyer rose highest to flick home a third goal late on. Despite two late Scottish points, Ireland held on in injury-time and also sealed a double on the day, with the Irish camogie team defeating Scotland 5-03 to 2-00 earlier.
All eyes now will be on Darragh McCarthy’s recovery, as Tipperary fans and Liam Cahill anxiously await news on one of their brightest young stars.
