A monkey is on the loose in Mississippi after a truck carrying rhesus monkeys overturned.

JASPER, Mississippi — The Jasper County Sheriff’s Department says that at least one monkey is on the loose after a truck crash on I-59  in Mississippi.

The crash happened Tuesday, Oct. 28, when a truck carrying rhesus monkeys from Tulane University overturned.

Deputies say the truck driver warned them the monkeys were dangerous and could pose a threat to humans.

“We took the appropriate actions after being given that information from the person transporting the monkeys,” the Jasper County Sheriff’s Department stated.

However, Tulane University officials said in a statement that the monkeys “are not infectious.”

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is assisting local law enforcement at the scene.

Tulane plans to send a team to collect the monkeys still caged on Wednesday.

“We are actively collaborating with local authorities and will send a team of animal care experts to assist as needed,” Tulane University said.
