A former police officer has died after being struck by a car in northern NSW.

Emergency services were called to a showground on Coldstream Street, in Ulmarra – about 15km north of Grafton – after reports of a crash about 4.50pm yesterday.

Officers at the scene were told that a white four-wheel drive had hit a pedestrian before being seen driving along Big River Way towards Grafton.

Paramedics treated a 55-year-old woman for serious injuries, however, she died at the scene.

9News understands that the woman is a former NSW police officer.

Police have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances of the crash. 

Following inquiries, about 7.40am today, police arrested a 50-year-old man and seized a white four-wheeled drive in South Grafton. 

The man has been taken to Coffs Harbour Police Station, where inquiries are ongoing.
