Prince Andrew and Sarah “Fergie” Ferguson’s decision to live together long after their divorce was about money, a royal expert tells the Daily Mail.
“It’s lucrative for both of them to be together,” commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told the outlet in a story published on Wednesday, October 29, adding that the “mutually advantageous” agreement has enabled “them to live at a certain level.”
Fergie, 66, split from the prince, 65, after 10 years of marriage in 1996, but boasted to the Financial Times in 2021 that they are “the happiest divorced couple in the world.”
“I’m lucky enough to be a guest at Royal Lodge” which is “quite big,” she added of the 30-room mansion. “He’s that side and I’m this side.”
“They’ve kept that facade up very well,” Fitzwilliams told the Daily Mail. “My feeling is that it was because they are extremely greedy.”
But following the revelation that Andrew’s lease requires him to pay only “one peppercorn” of rent each year, the pair have reportedly agreed to leave.

“Now this cover is blown, they want to live apart in two homes,” Fitzwilliams told the outlet. “The world can clearly see that the previous arrangement was designed to maximise the benefit of Andrew’s public life for them privately.”
As Examiner previously reported, Andrew has allegedly asked to move into Frogmore Cottage and for his ex-wife to get Adelaide Cottage amid continued backlash over their connection to late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein which led to the relinquishing of their royal titles.
“I vigorously deny the accusations against me,” Andrew said in a statement on Friday, October 17.
A spokesperson for Fergie shared a statement to People addressing the reports of an email she wrote calling Epstein a “supreme friend” in 2011: “The Duchess spoke of her regret about her association with Epstein many years ago, and as they have always been her first thoughts are with his victims. Like many people, she was taken in by his lies. As soon as she was aware of the extent of the allegations against him, she not only cut off contact but condemned him publicly, to the extent that he then threatened to sue her for defamation for associating him with paedophilia. She does not resile from anything she said then. This email was sent in the context of advice the Duchess was given to try to assuage Epstein and his threats.”
