Toronto Blue Jays starter Trey Yesavage has set a rookie record with 12 strikeouts in Game 5 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Yesavage surpassed Don Newcombe of the Brooklyn Dodgers, who struck out 11 New York Yankees in Game 1 of the 1949 World Series.

The Blue Jays’ starter has struck out every member of the Dodgers starting lineup at least once.

The 22-year-old was making his first postseason start on the road and he came out of the gate firing, striking out Mookie Betts to end the first and following that up by ringing up Freddie Freeman, Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman in order in the second.

Yesavage continued that streak into the third inning by sitting down Max Muncy before Kiké Hernández ended the run with a solo homer to get the Dodgers on the board.

Undetered, Yesavage went back to work striking out Shohei Ohtani to end the third, before picking up two strikeouts in the fourth, two more in the fifth, another in the sixth and reset the mark by getting Freddie Freeman in the seventh.

This was the fifth postseason start for the Pennsylvania native, who made three regular season starts for the Jays after he was called up to the Major League team in September.

Yesavage set a franchise record with 11 strikeouts in his first playoff start against the Yankees in the ALDS.
