Niagara police say they have arrested a man after finding another man dead in Port Colborne, Ont., sparking a search for a “possible armed suspect.”

Police were called Wednesday morning to a residence on Fares Street, where they found a man dead, they said in a news release.

They began searching for a suspect in the “possible weapons incident.” The investigation led police to a residence on Mitchell Street and then to an area on the west side of the canal near Clarence Street, police said.

Around 3 p.m., police say they located the 27-year-old suspect and arrested him, they said.

Police had asked residents to remain inside and lock their doors during the search.

Following the arrest, police said they “would like to thank the public for their assistance.”

‘What’s going on here?’

Joe White, a Port Colborne resident, happened to drive by one of the locations with a heavy police presence on Wednesday morning.

“I said ‘Wow. What’s going on here in this little town, eh?'” White said.

Police previously released the name and photo of the suspect to help find him.

They have not said if the man arrested is facing any charges. He remained in custody and will have a bail hearing on Thursday, according to police.

Police say their homicide unit has taken over the investigation and further information will be released as it becomes available.

A number of schools were also in a hold and secure, police said, but those orders have since been lifted.

A hold and secure occurs when there’s a threat in the general vicinity of a school, but not on, or very close to school property.
