The parcel was marked as puppy dog food and Gardai had organised a controlled operation due to information received in relation to the movement of illegal drugs.

A Garda member in disguise brought the parcel to 117 Riverside, Coolshannagh, Monaghan and Mr Vertelis signed for the parcel, moments later Gardai executed a warrant that was secured under section 26 at Monaghan District Court the previous Wednesday the 23th of July.

Following his arrest at the scene, he was subsequently charged under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

Judge Finnegan heard that no reply was given when the arrest took place and when he was charged and cautioned also.

The court heard there had been three warrants currently issued for Mr Vertelis’ arrest, one from Dundalk, one from Bray and one from Monaghan.

The court was told that the man who has been a resident in Ireland for the last nine years, attempted to evade custody in Monaghan earlier  today when he tried to make a run for it from outside Monaghan Garda Station.
