An English tourist who died after he was seriously injured following an assault in Dublin city centre earlier this year had strong Donegal connections.

Anthony Herron (41) was seriously injured in an assault in the Temple Bar Square area in the early hours of Thursday, August 21. He was taken to Beaumont Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to a hospital in the UK, where he sadly passed away at the weekend.

Anthony is the son of Michael Herron, formerly of Glendowan, Ardara, and was a regular visitor to the area when his grandparents, Mick and Kitty, were alive. Michael emigrated to Birmingham over 50 years ago and still lives there while his brothers, Lawerence, Dan and Eugene, live in the south Donegal area.

The late Mr Herron and his partner, Laura, had one young child, and another baby on the way in January. They had also recently purchased a house near London. Predeceased by his late mother, he is also survived by siblings, Brendan, Michelle and Paul, as well as extended family members in Ardara. Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed.

An update from a family member on a JustGiving fundraiser, described him as an “amazing person” and said what happened to him was “truly heartbreaking”.

They said it was an “outrage to think this could actually happen to anyone in a city on an evening out”.

A man aged in his 20s, Darragh O’Brien (22) of no fixed abode, has appeared before the courts charged in relation to the incident.
