An allegedly intoxicated man causing chaos in the main street of an Otago town attempted to flee police when they were transporting him to court.

Waikouaiti residents called police after watching the 39-year-old man stumbling around Main St with a bottle of alcohol in his hand at 10.45am on Thursday, Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said.

Officers went to arrest the man after it was discovered he was breaching his bail condition not to consume alcohol. However, he decided to take officers on a “very short foot chase”.

After a few metres, he was arrested and taken to Dunedin Central Police Station.

Later, while being taken to the Dunedin District Court, the man ran off down the road, this time making it 100m before being arrested, Snr Sgt Bond said.

He was charged with resisting arrest and escaping custody and given a brand-new court date. — Allied Media
